Happy Spring, My Friends!
I am overjoyed to feel spring is in the air. Wild flowers are a bloomin’, trees are budding, the creeks are flowing and my garden is planted. Check it out!
Wish I could take all the credit, but I definitely did not do all the work this year in my garden. I had the great fortune of having a wonderful Ukrainian woman, affectionately known as “Babushka” by her family here (some of my great friends, The Novak Family, who happened to move into my neighborhood (yay!!!), whip my overgrown winter garden into shape. I’ve got so many veggies planted such as peas, green beans, summer squash, tomatoes, potatoes, radishes, beets, kale, chard, mustards, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet peppers, hot peppers, lettuces, basil and a big handful of other culinary herbs. I can’t wait to cook with all of these amazing foods when they come ripe. Babushka, I know you probably can’t read this since you don’t speak English, but I hope you are feeling’ the love from me cause I am so grateful.
Today, March 20th, is a very powerful day. Not only is it the first day of spring, but it is a new moon, a solar eclipse, and it is my mom’s birthday! (Hi mom)!!
In celebration of this beautiful season, I am offering a Special 15% Off discount for my Spring Seasonal Menu Plan. It took me many months to create each seasonal menu plan. I took into account all of the requests from nutrition clients for years that wanted recipes they could get good at (in order to become better cooks) and that wanted a calendar of meals, real food recipes, a shopping list, a prep list, how-to tips and more. These menu plans are based on seasonal, organic, fresh food and are also all gluten free, Paleo, Weston Price oriented, dairy optional and delicious!
By purchasing this menu plan, you are not only making an investment in your health, but also in your quality of life as it will save you lots of time in the kitchen! You will also become a better cook if you really follow the plan.
To purchase your Spring Seasonal Menu Plan, use discount code “Spring” at checkout to redeem your 15% discount. (This offer is good until midnight March 26th).
Spring Renewal
The change of seasons is a powerful and sacred time and one that was acknowledged by our ancestors. Imagine the joy felt after a long winter living in a snow covered tipi. You would likely dance and sing and thank the creator too! Here is an excerpt from Mystic Mamma:
Like our ancestors before us, we are being called to pause with reverence and tune in to the greater cosmic cycles that we are a part of.
Return, return, return…and enter the stillness through meditation, prayer or ceremony offering gratitude for the gift of Life and All that Is.
The transition from winter to spring is one of the hardest seasonal changes of all of the seasons though. While most of us are very excited to have warmer days and the return of budding plant life, our bodies don’t always catch up so easily. The reason why is because we are going from a cold, dark, heavy time where our focus is naturally inwards to a time of warmth, expansion, rebirth and new life. Many people get sick during this particular season change. We are entering into the season ruled by the Liver. It naturally wants to purge the old heaviness from winter. If we can support it in doing this, we will likely stay well during this transition. If we resist it, our body may get sick (or “get well” as my friend, Georgie, calls it) so we can naturally cleanse. Getting sick is ultimately our bodies way of making us slow down, rest and detox. Winter is so important to fully experience. Hopefully you have really taken the time to rest and hibernate. You will have more energy and feel more renewed the rest of the year if you did so. If you didn’t take time to do so, well, hey, there is always next year!
But now it is time to break out of the hibernation patterns that might have felt so comfortable in winter like sleeping in, taking lots of naps, watching lots of movies, eating heavy foods and come into the lighter season of spring (where there is literally more light). Spring is about renewal. It is about going outside, getting more light, re-communing and re-connecting with nature. It is wonderful to have a ritual to really let go of the hibernation mode of winter and consciously enter into spring. Some simple things you can do are put away your winter clothes, go on a hike and notice how nature has changed, mix up your eating habits to incorporate more bitter foods (which cleanse the liver), do a cleanse (my Nourishing Cleanse is awesome at this time), and begin to move more if you have been somewhat stagnant or stationary. Eating lots of greens, especially bitter ones is really helpful to the liver and will help you adapt to this new time. Dandelion greens, arugula, mustards, collards, kale, chard, lettuces, and green shoots of all sorts help your body to wake up and dust off those winter ways. Eggs are also a spring food. With the increased light, the pituitary gland of the chicken makes them start to lay more eggs. Eggs are very good for ovaries and the reproductive system in general and can increase fertility. If you are looking to start a bun in your oven, this is definitely a good time to do so! Eating liver is also very supportive for your own liver at this time. Make sure as always to find pasture raised eggs, meats, etc. and organic, seasonal, local veggies too. I am wishing you a smooth transition to this season of renewal and rebirth. As always, I love to hear from you. Feel free to drop by and leave a comment below.
Happy Spring….
